Live at Leeds: Who's best...

Their 1970 performance, before 2,000 students at a

university refectory, produced what has been described

as the best live album of all time. Now Pete Townshend

and Roger Daltrey are to return to the site of their

rock masterpiece. Ian Herbert reports

It was with a sense of anxiety as well as fervour that

the Leeds University student union awaited the arrival

of its latest big-name band, The Who, on St

Valentine's Day, 1970.

A newly purchased stage ensured that Townshend,

Daltrey and Co would not have to jump up on tables to

perform, as some previous bands had done. But there

were serious concerns about the group's 10 massive

amplifiers, the like of which had never been seen

before in the student refectory which doubled up as a

rock venue. "We stacked the amps on dining tables,

five each side of the stage, and hoped for the best,"

recalls John Standerline, one of the university

entertainments committee which received the band that

day.

Happily, the amps did remain intact, delivering the

mighty, primal sounds which, though Leeds did not know

it at the time, were to assume a seminal part in rock

history. The furious three-hour concert in the

refectory that Saturday night was recorded for The

Who's legendary Live at Leeds album, which is still

considered by many critics to be the best live album

made and an inspiration to the heavy metal genre. It

is also common consensus that Townshend's searing,

improvised guitar solos during a 15-minute take on My

Generation have never been bettered.

Now, minus their drummer Keith Moon, who died in 1978,

and John Entwistle, the bassist who died four years

ago, they are to make a return pilgrimage. The

university announced yesterday that Pete Townshend and

Roger Daltrey would kick off The Who's forthcoming

world tour later this month with another gig in the

refectory. The legends will also unveil a local civic

trust blue plaque at the venue to mark the 1970 gig.

The inspiration for Live at Leeds II is Andy Kershaw,

who was entertainments officer at the university for

two years in the early 1980s before pursuing his BBC

career. Kershaw found himself in conversation on the

refectory stage with the university's vice-chancellor,

Professor Michael Arthur, last year, after receiving

an honorary doctorate in music. He was informed of the

plans for the blue plaque and two weeks later, a

chance encounter with The Who's manager Bill

Curbishley at Womad - Peter Gabriel's festival of

world music, arts and dance - led to an approach to

Townshend, 60, and Daltrey, 61.

Both musicians are said to be delighted by the idea of

returning to the refectory, the compact, low-ceilinged

art deco building which became one of Britain's most

improbable rock venues in the 1960s and has remained

one ever since. "Doctor Andy, I'm really excited about

this," Townshend told Kershaw in a recent e-mail,

which revealed that Kershaw's doctorate is evidently

taking some living down.

"Both of these musicians have a real grasp of the

historical and emotional significance of them coming

back," Kershaw said yesterday. "They are doing this

because they want to do it, not because they are going

to make any money out if it. It will be the starting

point for a tour which will take in football stadiums

and baseball stadiums across Britain and the US."

Fittingly, the band will be supported by the mod

rockers Casbah Club, featuring Pete Townshend's

younger brother, Simon, as guitarist and vocalist,

when they play the venue a week on Saturday.

The refectory, a long, narrow room where Leeds

students have dined since 1955, had its share of big

names before The Who rolled into town. Fleetwood Mac,

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin had all gone before. But

few groups were making waves quite like Daltrey,

Townshend, Moon and Entwistle. The Leeds concert came

on the back of the band's success at Woodstock,

broadcast to the world in an accompanying documentary

film, where they performed much of their rock opera

Tommy. A live album had remained beyond them, though.

The group balked at the idea of wading through

recordings from their American tour to produce one, so

decided to make one at a British concert. The band's

appearance at Hull on 13 February seemed the perfect

opportunity and the concert which made Leeds a

household name might have been called Live at Hull,

had the line connecting the bass guitar to the tape

recorder been working properly on Humberside. It was

not - and the concert at Leeds, which was arranged at

just two weeks' notice, suddenly assumed a huge

significance.

For a time it seemed the Leeds concert was destined to

go the same way. "During the afternoon, we realised

that the recording would need double the electricity

that was available," recalls Simon Grogan, an ents

officer, who secured the gig for the university and

went on to work for Chrysalis before swapping music

for a life as a sheep farmer in Scotland. "Luckily,

two students on the committee were technical whiz kids

and got the problem sorted."

The band launched the concert with "Can't Explain" and

"Substitute" moving on to Townshend's masterpiece

Tommy. With two hours' furious music behind them,

there was no let up. "Summertime Blues", "Shaking All

Over" and "My Generation" were to follow.

A delirious audience must have helped. The gig had

prompted 6am queues at the student union that day.

Even the queues became a story for the university

newspaper, which reported on "a rota system for

leaving the queue to warm up" which was in operation.

The 11s 6d tickets (£6 in today's money) sold out in

an hour. More than 2,000 students crammed into the

refectory for the gig and 1,000 listened on the roof.

"We just had a feeling it was going to be good,"

Townshend told the Yorkshire Evening Post a few days

later. "We played better than we have for a long

time." The band's fee for the concert was £1,000 but

they didn't even cash the cheque. "I had to give them

another cheque when they came the following November

to play Leeds again," says Brogan.

Only six tracks made it on to the famous album which,

with its plain brown cardboard cover and ink

lettering, was designed to look like the simple cover

of a bootleg LP of the era. The label was handwritten

(apparently by Townshend), and included instructions

to the engineers not to attempt to remove any

crackling noise. Townshend remixed the Live at Leeds

tapes when the full concert was finally released four

years ago.

Q magazine recently voted the work the greatest live

rock album of all time. "We may never see the likes of

such an event again," says Kershaw. "It's a corporate

world now. The venues are bigger and the student

unions just don't wield any power."

To celebrate the concert, Sir Peter Blake, art

director for The Who's Face Dances album, will also

create a new artwork, to be added to the Sir Peter

Blake Music Art Gallery at the University's School of

Music.

The Who will play the Leeds University refectory on 17

June. Tickets go on sale on 9 June at 9am at the Leeds

University Union on the university campus, £37.50. No

telephone bookings. Two tickets per person.

The Leeds University Tickets

The actual show tickets are very special, large, souvenir format,

(with an embedded security hologram) - we will scan the whole ticket

and put it in the Relayers files section, (post gig), though

we are pleased to report we have ours in hand right now!

Hopefully the show will be just as special, in a smallish space,

which is very reminiscent of The Belfry (StepMothers) where

they played the best show we ever saw, also in 1970.

By comparison, Hedgestock was a joke, in value terms,

1.25 hours for £587, or a full show in a tiny club like

environment for £37.50 - OK, it was for TCT, and the decision

to pay is a personal one. Maybe the feeling that this particular

series of shows is less than conducive to the diehard fans........ioho

Leeds goes some way to making up for all that, and yes, for those who

have commented, the significance is highly prominent in our minds! A

detailed report will appear here, approx. 4 hours after the gig!

(Sure if Matt had been around, he would have sorted more tickets for

the diehards. As it was mentioned here, after Pete's diary entry, Matt

himself delivered all the messages that you fine people sent to us for

forwarding to Pete, in person).

Brian and Max(contemporary) posted the links to the Leeds articles in

The Independent (Pete's favourite newspaper, if that is not very apparent

already!), and The Guardian - the printed versions are worth seeing, with the

added pictures, those we will put on the Files section ASAP.

Take care,

Thanks to Trrish-who-babe-mod-erator for inviting me in again, not to

mention an amazing amount of understanding in being okay with me going

to Leeds. I received the following as part of my Welcome message email;

{Hello, and welcome to Relayers! ozzie here, and I'll be keeping on

eye on Relayers for Trish. Have a good time!}

Weird.

Kind of nostalgic being back here in Relayers-ville! Yes the reports

are correct; I'm heading back to the place where last I broke my

camera and my ass; under the supervision of our friend JMP. Anyway

hello to all, I hope you don't get sick of my ozzie reports on this

last minute Cinderfella trip to the land where I belong (sorry it

fit). Flights are confirmed I think, and now to find a ticket. I

signed up over at the Shout, and I'm just waiting for a reply. Please

let me know if you here anything in the meantime.

Thanks, and love to all,

Moon on Leeds

...For the band, the venue and the audience obviously helped to make

the performance something spectacular. Quoted in the student union

newspaper after the gig, Keith Moon said: "We fed on the audience as

much as they feed on us … they were just too incredible."

Since i seem to have become the world's busiest man that I know I have

had little time, let alone the finances to make big plans for the

summer shows. Leeds Uni was to pass me by it seemed without my having

time to even have a browse on ebey for tickets, the list only gets

looked at once or twice a week and I still haven't heard the new

stuff!! Although for the first time ever I asked a good contact to

try and get a leeds pass or two.

Then... last night a (transatlantic) phone call out of the blue and a

wonderful relayer has provided me witha ticket and I'm going

Whoooohoooo.

I shan't identify the generous person in question but you know who you

are and your a true mate, cheers.

now that's a cure for the summertime blues.

On the road to Leeds

Hello all, I just pulled (no Seth) into Ohio and have 3 hours before heading off

to NJ to catch the real flight. I'm walking through the metal ditector in

Denver, and the 60 something security agent looks at my shirt and says "they're

so old they call them the...? I missed the punch line. So I spend the next three

minutes redressing, trying to think what it could be, "the whom," "the how"

based on the soud, I can't come up with anything that could have made sense, let

alone been funny. So, as i'm threading my belt through the last loop, I think

i'll just ask him, but the fact was I politely laughed at it, and my ..."looking

in the mirror and seeing a police car" sensibility kicked in and, having a long

way to go, I just walked away, leaving it a mystery. So I get into Ohio, and

having 3 hours, I start searching for a healthy breakfast, when I pass this 30

something couple, and the woman looks at me and blurts out "I love your shirt!"

(30 yrs. Of M R&B) I love when that happens, and I quickly think about telling

her the whole story, but I only have 3 hours, so I say thank you, and with a big

smile, i just keep on going. I sit down to enjoy my excellent breakfast find (.5

lbs nut, seed and raisen mix, banana, and orange) and I get a txt msg from Max,

I txt him back and then my phone rings, it's Max! I just love the tree to tree

thing. Oh(hio) well, just two more hours! Love, -ozzie

NJ to Leeds

Oops! Next stop was really Brums, or Birmingham for the uninitiated. Anyway, I

get to passport control and the 60 something control officer asks,

"What is the purpose of your stay?"

ozzie: "Who show"

Officer: "Say what?"

ozzie: "Who show"

Officer: blank stare.

ozzie: "concert"

Officer: "okay then, enjoy your stay"

ozzie: "thanks"

Next stop: Kiddy!

(i think)

Love,

ozzie

only in England (no who)

I stop in at the mall and Johnnie Walker has a huge display with a formula one

car, and the beautiful blonde 20 something spokesperson hands me a coupon for a

free shot of JW Blk, and points me to the bar. I look over and there are a

couple of fresh bartlet pears on the bar along side 100 waiting shotglasses. So

i think for a second, it is fresh fruit, and then i just keep walking.

Remembering Leeds

NEW PETE DIARY

Ready to Roll, Wobble, Slip, Slide and Collapse.

Sorry, I meant ready to rock. There are a number of moments in the

Who set when I feel like Jack Black in School of Rock. He has

parodied so many of my moves, and so brilliantly. But the key moment

is when I play a series of AC/DC like semi-quavers with my fingers

during the middle build up in Won't Get Fooled Again. The only thing

that's missing is his enthusiasm - I won't mention the school girls.

But on our test webcast we had the guy with no shirt, Rabbit didn't

even know we were filming, or so he said. He must live in a

completely private world back there in that keyboard array. In the

flesh he looked pretty scary. I was stunned to see that on the TV

screens he looked completely gorgeous.

The rehearsals are complete now and the equipment is on its way to

Leeds. This time the caravan of vehicles headed up the M1 motorway

includes four new ones - Rachel's Airstream studio for In The Attic,

a Satellite truck (or more accurately a rented white van with a free-

standing satellite dish in the back), a Production vehicle (a huge

camper bus) and my own old Airstream bus. I hasten to note that I do

not entertain visiting fans in my bus - it acts as a private dressing

room. Ring the bell and you may get stale chicken goujons thrown at

you.

Leeds promises to be a very exciting and also movingly nostalgic day.

My friend Robin Denselow is now a correspondent for the Newsnight

show on the BBC, and is fairly fresh back to rock and pop reporting

after a stint in the actual fray in Iraq. He will be up there to

cover the unveiling of an English Heritage Blue Plaque that

celebrates the University building as the site of the Live At Leeds

recording. He is also doing a feature on our webcasting. Andy Kershaw

will be there, he was once a student at Leeds, is now a radio man

whose knowledge of World Music in particular makes every show he does

a treat; he has been a real force in getting the Who back to Leeds

this Saturday. Also present will be my old mate Sir Peter Blake the

Pop Artist I so adored as a teenager, who curated the sleeve for the

Who's multi-faceted Face Dances LP sleeve of 1981; he has done a

wonderful new sleeve design for Saturday's show. Peter Smith who was

the man who actually booked the Who for the show in 1970 will be

there of course. Lots to do, lots of people to see.

Our set will certainly fail to match the now legendary show we did in

1970. That show happened at the end of a long and elegant American

tour, at a time we had our original line up, just the four of us, and

despite our apparent lunacy, were fit, strong and playing powerfully.

Tonight is the first show after an exhausting rehearsal schedule, and

kicks off a tour that will last slightly over a year if I get my wish

to end it next year at Glastonbury. Now that will be the show to

watch. We should be warmed up by then.

Spitfire Films are filming the show on Hi-Definition, and if there is

more history to be made, perhaps it is simply that we are all of us

able to gather again thirty-six years later and celebrate not only a

great Who record, but also - at Leeds Refectory - a great a tradition

of British University life in the discriminating patronage of

emerging music artists. We owe so much to the gang at Leeds

University of 1970. And so does Mose Allison……..

hey, trishee...got a tissue?

okay, after reading the article about Leeds that Brian posted and then reading

Pete's diary about returning to Leeds, I'll admit to getting a bit misty each

time. Trishee...have you cried yet today?

iaam(istyeyes)g

Re: hey, trishee...got a tissue?

Hee.

Reminds me of someone...might have been Jay Leno, or actually I

think it was Triumph the Comic Insult Dog, going down the line of

Morrissey mopes standing in line for the show that night. With their

black clothes and eyeliner and suicidal outlook it was easy to find

plenty of comedy fodder. He asked one chubby male teenager with a

dyed black Flock of Seagulls haircut, "When was the last time you

cried?" The kid thought a second and said, "This morning." It was

classic.

The Who Encore Series - 2006

From PT.com - http://tinyurl.com/mqwvz

16 June 2006

The Who Encore Series

We're happy to announce that The Who 2006 Encore Series will once

again be brought to you by the combined efforts of the band and the

encore series team at TheMusic.com. After successful Who Encore Series

CD's for both the 2002 and 2004 tours, there will also be available

DVD's of each show in addition to the standard 2-CD gatefold,

collector's and deluxe-edition sets. The DVD's of each show will be

shot with a four camera crew and are expected to have both a surround

and stereo mix on each disc. As in the past, the audio for the CD's

and DVD's will be a "Live Mix" by The Who engineering team, mastered

by Jon Astley at Close to the Edge, and pressed onto high-quality

manufactured discs - not CD-R's or DVD-R's. As always, the profits

from The Who Encore Series will go to charities designated by the

band. For those unable to attend one of the concerts on this tour, the

Encore Series offers a chance for you to experience The Who from home,

and for those of you that do see a show, an opportunity to relive the

experience again and again…..

DVD's of all European shows (with the exception of the June 17th

Leeds University Show) will be made available as NON-region encoded

(plays on most players) PAL format discs. In order to play these DVD's

you must have both a PAL-capable DVD player AND PAL-capable

Television. These discs will play WORLDWIDE on DVD-equipped computers

which have DVD playback software installed and operative.

Just arrived and went to the campus to figure out how to find the box office.

There is a hive of activity and more security than you can imagine. The stage is

assembled in the refectory and there's a mega boogie on PT's side of the stage

with a hi-watt head. There are three tractor trailers in front and two huge

coaches at back plus a power generator.

I did not see any backdrop. The student's union is next door and they are

bringing in ten barmen for to-morrow . Imagine a campus like this in the

I didn't even see ITA or the appetizer.

Meg,

thanks for the kind words! I love being able to Relay the story. Everyone has a

lot to be excited about with this tour.

ozzie

ps As i told trrish, i took some very cool photos, and recorded the plaque

unveiling. I'll get it all up on the Whola site when i get back.

Roger the poof.

you have to love, love love Pete for stopping roger fron whining.

Don't get me wrong, i also loved Roger tonight, he sang his heart out. And it is

a fucking who show. He's going to have to harden up before playing for 50,000

rabbid rock fans.

oh and Simon was awesome, awesome, fucking awesome. I know most of you saw for

yourselves, but i'll say it anyway, they were all amazing!

ozzie

Re: Roger the poof

I just sent a note to ozzie telling him that we didn't see much for

ourselves. He's thinking like I was that we were going to see the

whole thing. I wanna hear about Cry If You Want! I told him to

please send us more details.

I feel kind of mislead about the first three songs thing, but as

Alan says, beggars can't be choosey, huh. The CD awaits (wait, does

it?)

Live From Leeds - see Relayers Files section

Well, that was quite a show, including The Seeker, Naked Eye, Wire And

Glass EP full preview.

Pete playing Let's See Action, wearing headphones, and with his own

stageside mixer.

The Fender Vibro King AND the HIWATT 100 with Mesa Boogie speaker cab,

blended as on the first night of the Forum shows - really gives the guitar

sound extra punch

The band is rejuventated in short, the new material, set changes help,

but they look fit and ready to take a significant World Tour.

It was really, really hot in there - PT 'weigh yourself when you get

home, you will have lost about a stone due to to all the sweat you will lose tonight'. Great, friendly crowd, outside and inside.

We stood with the lad who was first in the queue for the Union ticket

sales, who had lost his job to get tickets for him and his dad. There was a Geordie bloke going to the bar for beer, who kept bringing back two glasses of ice cubes for those up front who did not want to miss a second. Amazing fan sprit - we could give examples from the whole day.

We can confirm - Leeds was filmed in High Definition - (the cameras

had HD logos, bit of a give away!), we spoke to one of the cameramen, who said he had been told it would come out as a Who release via normal retail channels - not an internet only one.

We were interviewed by Yorkshire TV for their Calendar programme, which airs tomorrow - about what the show, and The Who meant to us (harder questions would have been nicer, please!!), we also directed them to Ron Dovey, who was standing a few feet away. Gary and Melissa (when not selling Who 2006 programmes) were our companions during the long wait for the Blue Plaque unveiling (as they were for

the Hendrix one Pete did!), it was supposed to happen at 4pm, but Roger did not arrive in Leeds by plane until 5pm, so it was closer to 5:30!

We spoke to Andy Kershaw, who is really the one reponsible for making

this actually happen, he was very excitable, nice, level headed bloke..........as is his sister Liz, who stood a few feet away to watch the show,

right down front with the punters, bless her! Andy is the one in khaki

on the left of the photo we put on Relayers files. There are two pics just now, Roger, Pete after the just appeared, with Andy, and one of Peter

Blake being interviewed by the BBC. He was dignified, gracious, and very happy to talk to the interested fans.

We will put some more pictures up later, it's almost 4am here, and we

have the Brighton Centre gig tomorrow.....

Take care,

K+L

Is that Ozzie in the background during the interview part?

Richie

Oh, good eye, Richie! Yes, that is him. It looks as if he made that

cameo appearance just for us, doesn't it?

I want to say I was close to letting the tears go halfway through CIYW. It was

truly something beautiful. It seemed to me that roger started off too fast for

pete, and pete used his hand to slow it down, and then it just transported me

right out of my body. Sounds corny writing it, but it's twue it's twue.I think

it was Brian L. That had another take on it, that it was Zak that pete was

slowing down. Pete was in total control, kind of conductor-ish. It was okay by

me.

Re: WOW!

Ozzie,

You must still be on Mountain Time. Its not bedtime here for a couple

of hours, so you may as well see the sunrise. Thanks for the posts!

Are you going to Brighton?

Re: live at leeds

Managed to take around 55 photos. There are a couple of weird ones..... We saw

Rabbit in drag ( well sort of). At the Bar and had a great laugh. Managed to

find a great Indian restaurant at midnight and had great meal with oswald and

Brian...there's a nice photo of that. On our way back and we feel dead from

Leeds. More later.

More Leeds on Relayers Files

Couple more files, Pete and Roger after unveiling the plaque, on the

left is Andy Kershaw and next to him, in the cream suit/blue shirt, is Simon Brogan, he is the guy who booked the Who show back in 1970. He gave a short speech, leaving Roger in fits of laughter when he mentioned that one of Leeds other 'claims to fame' at that time was that the 'strongest LSD around was available on the Leeds Campus'! We have it on widescreen DV (digital

video tape), Roger and Pete did short speeches - Pete said he was

conscious of being there without Keith and John on this occasion.

The slightly mess picture (yes we could have cropped with Photoshop!)

does convey the considerable Media attention, national and local BBC, ITV and Sky TV were all picking up on the significance of the event. There was a press pack giving all the background, the BBC guy we parked close to and, seeing his ID badge,

had a short chat with earlier in the day - he mentioned there may be a

special programme, but BBC24 News and regular news slots, and Newsnight next week were definite. At the end of the show, he was at the back of the hall, looking through a pile of copious handwritten notes.

Plus, the ticket scan, really nice souvenir type, note the security

hologram in the top left corner.

Thanks to Max, Oz, for all the collaborative feedback - hope we have

all combined to give a flavour of 'being there' to you all...........all present company accepted, (or should that be excepted!), this was really

was all about Who2.

Take care,

K+L

Re: WOW!

Ozzie on the bbc....3rd word he spoke was f..king!! That was fun.

be archived or something, try bbc radio site. I don't need I saw Ozzie

live on the radio, front row, 6 inches away. Ozzie, I love you, thanks

for everything dude!!

Leeds Revisited

On a balmy summer's night, the hottest ticket in town was The Who's

much-awaited return to Leeds. First things first, if this was the band

on the FIRST night of the tour god alone knows how good they'll be by

the LAST night because, from the opening chords of Who Are You right

through to the closing rush of Won't Get Fooled Again the band were

in blistering, breathless form.

Wire & Glass, the forthcoming single/mini-opera, was debuted and went

down a storm whilst old favourites like Relay were delivered with equal gusto.

I feel very lucky to have witnessed such an incendiary performance - as

I suspect everyone else in the packed, stiflingly hot Leeds Uni refectory felt

afterwards too. No need for me to wax lyrical about the performance as

it was all recorded for later release in the Encore Series so you'll all be

able to sample it for yourselves … can't wait. For now, some pix from

last night and the set-list. More pix to follow on Who site asap. And with that, it's on to sunny Brighton …
